When you take a vessel to sea its a good idea to leave a
passage plan with somebody. This helps them locate you if you are overdue. We
did that in the Navy all the time and the Coast Guard highly recommends filing
a passage plan when you take your small vessel to sea. Imagine if you went to
Europe for a three week vacation and when you were supposed to arrive back on
your plane where your parents were waiting for you at the airport you suddenly
didn't show up. You didn't tell them or anybody where you were going. Your
parents or friends or employer has a problem. You are "someplace in
Europe". The chances of you being found easily are slim to none. Had you
given your parents and one other person a copy of your intended itinerary they
might be able to track you down very quickly.
The format of an itinerary need not be elaborate. Just
give your date of departure and arrival the airline and flight numbers and an
idea of your intended trip. If you are staying at a particular location give
the street address and a phone number. The important thing is that you leave
an itinerary and the reason you pick two people is that one could get
lost.
